Wine by Vending Machine

Pennsylvania shoppers just got lucky. They can buy wine through vending machines. Some connoisseurs may shun something like this, but if they are selling good quality wine, then the convenience can’t be beat.

Pennsylvania is one of nine state governments involved in retail alcohol sales, and this is one way to allow the sale of wine in grocery stores.The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) is testing these wine vending machines. An ID is required, and you even have to submit to a breath test by blowing into a tube at the machine before it will dispense the wine.

Pennsylvania is the first state in the nation to try out these wine kiosks. Go Pennsylvania!

All transactions are captured on a surveillance camera, and monitored by state employees who approve the sales remotely.

The wine vending machines hold more than 700 bottles at one time. They were introduced in grocery stores in Harrisburg and Mechanicsburg, and if successful, there are plans to add approximately 98 additional kiosks statewide.

“These kiosks fill a void and serve consumers at the supermarket without having to go to another store,” said Patrick Stapleton, chairman of the PLCB.

Let’s hope this experiment goes well. Wine lovers need more options to purchase wine without a hassle. Anything that moves toward removing complications around the sale of the wine is a good thing.

Cool Summer Wine Dessert

This is a wonderful idea to zest up your summer desserts.

It’s a fruit cup made with jellied wine called, “Broken Jellied Wine with Summer Fruit.” It was created by Chef Deborah Madison, author of “Seasonal Fruit Desserts: From Orchard, Farm and Market.”

What is jellied wine? You are literally making wine based gelatin, with lots of other lovely ingredients of course. You then slice the gelatin into slivers, and mix it with your favorite summer fruits.

It’s a light, refreshing, wine dessert that is easy to make. The jellied wine can also bring a little sparkle and pizzazz to you summer desserts, because when you slice the jellied wine into slivers or cubes, it looks like its sparkling in the glass.

The suggested wines to use for this wine dessert are Marsala, Sherry, Riesling or even Champagne. Search for your favorite wines here.

The Ingredients for Chef Deborah Madison, Broken Jellied Wine with Summer Fruit are:

1/4 ounce envelope unflavored gelatin
1/3 cup organic sugar
1/2 cup wine or water
1 1/2 cups sweet and/or sparkling wine
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 to 1 1/2 cups fruit, cut or sliced into small pieces and lightly sugared

The following directions come from the New York Daily News.Com.

1. Sprinkle the gelatin over ¼ cup cold water and set it aside to soften. Combine the sugar with the ½ cup wine in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and stir in the softened gelatin. Stir until it’s thoroughly dissolved, then pour it into the rest of the wine along with the lemon juice. Mix well, then pour into a bowl or a compote dish and refrigerate until set.

2. Wine seems to take longer to set than cream or fruit juices, so plan on at least 6 hours, or even overnight for a firm set. Chop the jelly into cubes, then serve it in the compote or in wine or Champagne glasses interspersed with fruit.

Amazon Wine Venture Comes to An End

It was just a year ago that Amazon announced it was launching a wine venture with California’s Napa Valley and other U.S. regions wineries. Amazon has not released any details, but the company did announce that the program has ended.

It was always a wonder how Amazon was going to deal with the issue of shipping wine to consumers when many state laws limit the direct shipment of wine. The laws differ from state to state, but many place several limitations on the shipment of wine.

In an email to wineries on Friday, an Amazon account manager said, “This was a very tough choice for us … I am sorry that we won’t get to realize the vision on which we have collaborated.”

This is really unfortunate, because the Amazon juggernaut could have helped change some of the limitation on the state to state shipment of wine. With no major retail entity challenging the shipping restrictions placed on buying or selling wine online to certain states, there seems to be no end in sight. This is truly unfortunate. Another voice is silenced.

Twitter Wines for Charity

The big news in the wine industry this week is about the social network, Twitter. Twitter is getting into the wine industry by partnering with Crushpad and launching two wines on the Fledgling Wine label for charity. The chosen charity is Room to Read, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization that is focused on education and establishing schools and libraries for children in developing countries.

Fledgling Wine and Twitter will work with Crushpad to make a Pinot Noir and a Chardonnay. Five dollars from every $20 bottle sold will go to Room to Read. Room to Read is a wonderful charity that has already established over 700 schools and has supplied over 7,000 libraries with more than 5.7 million books.

The release date for Twitter’s Wine is planned for Fall 2010, because the wine is currently in the fermentation process, but you can follow news and updates at FledglingWine.Com, and of course Tweets on Twitter.

Twitter is really involved in the process. In later September, the Twitter team went to Crushpad to help sort the Pinot Noir grapes from Doctor’s Vineyard, and they posted the visit in this YouTube video.

It’s nice to see Twitter using it’s social networking power for a good cause, while bringing new wine to marketplace. It’s a win/win all the way around.

Wine Consumption Rising

With the economy still struggling along, you would think it would have a negative effect on wine consumption, but it doesn’t seem so. According to the Beverage Information Group’s recently released 2009 Wine Handbook, wine consumption in the U.S. rose 0.9 percent in 2008 to 294.7 million 9-liter cases. Although the growth rate of the wine industry has slowed, statistics show that 2009 is the 15th consecutive year of increase in U.S. wine consumption.

What is taking a hit in this economic downturn is imports. Consumption of imported wines dropped 1.8% while consumption of dometic wines rose 1.9%. Wine lovers are showing that they are more willing to be frugal by trading down in price when selecting their favorite wines, but they have not been willing to pull out of the wine market all together. The health benefits associated with the moderate consumpiton of wine, such as decreased risk of heart disease, cancer, and stroke are also noted as a key factors in the popularity and the increase in U.S. consumption of wine.

The 2009 Wine Handbook is the leading source of wine trends and consumption. The handbook also includes information on suppliers, advertising, consumer drinking preferences and much more. But since domestic wines are on the rise, it’s a good time to look at the expanding options out of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino through The Wine Lover’s Guide to Wine Country.
