What type of wine is most popular with wine lovers lately?
Oct 22nd, 2008 |
Just, in general. I need a gift and I’m stumped! Merlot? Chardonnay? Help!
Depends on where you are from; In Italy Chianti is king as Rioja is in Spain and Malbec in Argentina. Here in the States I would think Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Merlot are the most popular reds. Those who prefer dry whites will be drinking Chardonnay and those who like the sweeter whites, white Zinfandel is tops with Riesling a close second. If buying as a gift and you are not sure of the recipients preference then buy something you like and believe is a great wine.

if someone gave me a bottle of La Crema Pinot Noir, I would love them forever…$30-$40 per bottle, Kendall Jackson has a good Pinot Noir that’s a little less, I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like Pinot Noir, except maybe some people who thought White Zifandel (sp?) was actually a good wine…

I have found that a shiraz-cabernet is a hit at every party I go to…even with friends who normally do not like red wine…just my opinion.

It really depends on the persons taste. I prefer sparkling extra dry white wine ot pinot grigio. Red wines are too heavy.

In the US it is the ubiquitous Chardonnay or Merlot. For a real treat at a price of around $30 take a bottle of Austrian Gruner-Veltliner for your friend. Steininger is an excellent choice and you will impress your friend by taking something different. In a few years this wine will be amazingly successful Stateside.

Get them a membership in Wine of the Month Club, or one of it’s many imitators. Or a seasonal, regional wine from your area that they’re not likely to have tried.
